Nona Beamer
Honolulu, 1999
In this clip, Auntie Nona tells what she knows about the chant "Holoana `o Kaläkaua."
Length: 1:01

NONA BEAMER: "Holoana `o Kaläkaua" is kind of um, historical. There was Kaläkaua--[CHUCKLES]--looking for funds to replenish the treasury. And um, there was talk that he had gone to the different merchants to try to get money and uh, giving opium licenses, so he would add money to the treasury. Apparently, he didn't sell enough licenses. [CHUCKLES] So he's going to France and he's going to England to ask if we can um, uh, borrow money. And uh, I think his reputation precedes him as the Merrie Monarch. And they say, No, sorry. I wonder how he does replenish the treasury. [CHUCKLES] We have to find out. [CHUCKLES]
