Hula Pahu volume 1 (Kaeppler)
- Page 225 notes that Kumu Tom Hiona recorded this chant in 1972 with pahu accompaniment, but surmises that this was only for the purposes of the recording and was probably not choreographed as a Hula Pahu.
Hula Pahu volume 2 (Tatar)
- Page 282 of Chapter "The Music of the Pahu" mentions this chant in conjunction with Kumu Tom Hiona who recorded it as a Hula Pahu in 1972. Pages 283-287 give his chant melody. It is noted as 2 additional ancient hula types: Hula Ipu and Hula Ku`i.
Hawaiian Dictionary (Puku`i/Elbert)
- Haläli`i Definition #1 (Capital "H"): "Name of a pleasure-loving chief of Ni`ihau in ancient times." Definition #2 (small "h"): "A variety of sugar cane...perhaps named for Haläli`i, Ni`ihau where a famous sugar cane once grew in the sand dunes."
Nä Mele Hula volume 2 (Beamer)
- Page 72 tells of Auntie Nona's family background with this chant that is done as "joyous" and "vigorous." It is listed as 2 hula types: Hula Ku`i and Hula `Ölapa. Her grandma would use two claps on the vamp and retard the "Aia Nihoa" verse.

This chant falls into several general types or classes, including Hula Ali`i (due to its dedication to Queen Kap`iolani, wife of King David Kaläkaua), Hula `Ölapa (due to its structure in stanzas and the "eala" at the end), and Hula Wahi Pana (as it honors the islands of Ni`ihau, Kaua`i, and Nihoa).
